When gastric mucous cells are continuously exposed to carcinogenic substances, the cells turn into cancerous cells of which proliferation is not regulated. This is gastric cancer. Most gastric cancers are gastric adenocarcinoma, which originates from gastric mucous cells. Gastric cancer occurring on the gastric mucous membrane permeates into the stomach walls, passes through the submucous layer, muscle layer and serosa layer, and spreads to lymphatic nodes surrounding the stomach or to other organs, such as the liver, through blood. In some cases, it metastasizes to the peritoneum. When cancerous cells are located limitedly in the gastric mucous membrane or submucous layer, it is categorized as early gastric cancer. Around 50% of gastric cancer patients are diagnosed with early gastric cancer, and this can be treated through endoscopic resection or surgical operation. The cure rate is more than 90%.
KNUH operates a digestive system center and gastric cancer clinic to administer endoscopic mucosal resection for early gastric cancer patients. As patients can live their lives with a normal stomach, this technique improves the quality of life for patients. KNUH dedicates every effort to ensuring successful gastric cancer treatment by introducing the latest medical equipment and through active academic exchanges with other medical institutes.
